History in the Making

What a week it has been! Last Sunday BuckeyeThon at The Ohio State University set out on a quest to register 4,750 dancers for the 2015 Dance Marathon by Friday November 7th at 11:59PM. And what did we do? Just that and then some!

Over the years BuckeyeThon has experienced exponential growth within their organization and fundraising efforts but the 2015 Dance Marathon is going to make history.

This year BuckeyeThon set a fundraising goal of $1,000,000 and to carry out this they wanted 4,750 dancers to take part of the experience. Last week if you were walking around The Ohio State University’s campus you would see dozens of BuckeyeThon members canvasing, passing out free coffee, chalk drawings, BuckeyeThon information stands, and more. We as an organization wanted to encourage 4,750 dancers to join the team, to dance for the kids, and be help us raise $1,000,000 and make history. And were doing just that.

On Thursday evening the four thousandth dancer registered to dance in the 2015 Dance Marathon making BuckeyeThon’s Dance Marathon the LARGEST dance marathon in the COUNTRY. With over 150 annual dance marathons nationwide, this was a BIG deal but the numbers did not stop there. On Friday evening, which was the last day to register to dance, BuckeyeThon registered dancer number 4,750. Our organization was bursting with excitement, enthusiasm, and passion so we asked ourselves, “Why stop at 4,750 dancers? Lets go for 5,000!”. What happened next was tremendous.

For the first time in BuckeyeThon history and dance marathon history, we as an organization registered 5,089 dancers for the 2015 Dance Marathon on February 6th and 7th. We not only reached our goal, we exceeded it.

As a first generation college student I always hoped to find my niche at Ohio State. Attending one of the largest universities in the world is intimidating and overwhelming. Over the years I have had many great experiences, but BuckeyeThon has by far been my best one yet. This past week has proven to me that I have found my niche here at The Ohio State University. I am surrounded by more than 100 passionate, dedicated and inspiring BuckeyeThon members who urge me to dream big and never give up.

My fellow BuckeyeThon members and I have successfully registered over 5,000 more passionate, dedicated and inspiring Buckeyes to join us on February 6th and 7th to make a difference FOR THE KIDS! This accomplishment is truly amazing and almost hard to wrap my mind around, but WE DID IT; now the fun truly begins.

Our quest to raise $1,000,000 has now started! Since registering over 5,000 dancers, BuckeyeThon has already raised almost $110,000 For The Kids but we have a long way to go. I am truly confident in the capabilities of my fellow BuckeyeThon members and my fellow Buckeyes that we will raise $1,000,000 for the kids being treated on the Oncology/Hematology/BMT Unit at Nationwide Children’s Hospital here in Columbus, Ohio.

This past week has been an incredible reminder why I dance and why I attend The Ohio State University. Although our campus is large we all share the honor of being a Buckeye. Every Buckeye is involved with different organizations, pursue different majors and experience college differently. I am thankful however that The Ohio State University is supportive of BuckeyeThon and our mission to raise funds and awareness For The Kids. I am thankful for the 5,000 plus Buckeyes volunteering 12 hours of their time to dance, to sing, to laugh, to cry and to help us raise $1,000,000. I am thankful to call myself Buckeye because together we are history in the making. We are going to change the lives of kids so that one day they can dance for joy because cancer will no longer exist.
